Report on 50megs.com

This is a series of reports on free web hosts from around the internet, rating them against each other in categories such as simplicity, compatibility and speed, to name a few. A list of the other reported on sites are available here...

50megs.com is another site I tried to set up my web-page. As soon as I logged on to it I could see that it was one of the more simpler web hosts. This is a very well designed and makes setting yourself up very easy.

1. Simplicity

A soon as you log onto , you can immediately see where you should go to sign up. Many sites have their "sign-up" link hidden away in small font making it difficult to even get the first step underway. With 50megs.com its virtually is the first thing that you see. From here there is details page where you must enter in your email address and name etc ( They do not expect you to give other details like address )

2. Compatibility

This site allows you to connect via HTML IDE ( such as Microsoft FrontPage ) which make it very easy to get started if you're used to using a particular editor and just don't want to have to learn how to use a new one.50megs.com also includes an internal editor for those whom have never used one before or just want to have a try of a new one.

3. Advertising & Shopping

There isn't too much annoyance with advertising. Considering they're giving you the service for free, all you really have to put up with is a banner at the very top and very bottom of your page. On the free version of 50megs.com, there doesn't seem to be any kind of shopping facility ( i.e. allows a retailer to collect credit card details ) When you're first signing up to 50megs.com, if gives you the option where to choose the bare minimum for free or subscribe to the service with a fee for additional services, perhaps with this option, shopping could be done.

4. Speed & Purity

I decided to run the web site I created with 50megs.com through a HTML validator, to test for speed and purity ( i.e. how many errors ). It was error free, but this is not really too reassuring considering that the site I tested was very plain and ordinary. Perhaps with a more complicated web page, filled with images and links etc would top up more of an error count. The speed of the site fine also, but the same applies to how simple the site was. It may have had more of a slow down if more was on the page.

Overall 50megs.com is perfect for those people new to the web design game. Not the most user friendly one Ive seen but its still ok.    3/5
